New Cycle Paths and Footpaths

With Broomfield’s heavy traffic, it not surprising that many residents are reluctant to cycle.

In the Residents’ Questionnaire, you told us:

  • We should keep on trying to get safe cycle paths away from main roads (95% of responses)
  • People would cycle more if there were there were safer cycling routes and better, more clearly defined cycle lanes (62% of responses)
  • People would walk more if there were wider pavements and safer footpaths away from traffic (70% of responses).

So We Did:

So, the Group spent a lot of time and energy researching possible routes, planning a network of safe cycle and footpaths (north/south and east/west) and where necessary lobbying landowners to allow access across their land.

There’s still a lot to do. Turning the plans into reality will take some years and a lot of work – lobbying Essex Highways and landowners as needed, researching funding sources, consulting local people on the details etc.

The Neighbourhood Plan also includes a proposal for affordable cycle hire at the Village Hall, together with a re-charging hub for electric scooters. But most of all, we need new cycle paths – which will be safer for cyclists, motorists and pedestrians. We don’t want cycles and scooters to be competing for road space or be tempted to use pavements.

As stated, our proposals are just a beginning. But if local people support them, it will at least help to set the wheels in motion!
